Ivan obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Moscow and Saint Petersburg campuses of the Higher School of Economics, respectively, with both programmes focused on private and commercial law.

Ivan joined NAVICUS.LAW in 2021, and he has been dealing with top-tier ship collisions and oil spills cases in Russia ever since. Experience

  • Representing a foreign shipowner and his P&I club after a bunker oil spill in Saint Petersburg with the aggregate number of claims exceeding USD 5 million. The 2001 Bunkers Convention was applied in this case for the first time in Russian history.

  • Preparation of an expert report on Russian counter-sanctions regulations and their application to ship sale and financial transactions for the LMAA arbitration.

  • Protecting a Turkish shipowner in a ship salvage case with the arrest of the vessel and Russian arbitration proceedings ended with an amicable settlement.

  • Comprehensive legal support for a shipowner and its Club in a major allision case involving a Russian state-owned nuclear icebreaker (collecting evidence, negotiations, communication with state authorities, etc.) and further litigation in a commercial court for more than USD 3 million of losses.

  • Assisting with customs and border control authorities and regularly handling cases on administrative violations for Russian and foreign clients.

  • Handling the largest bunker oil spill in the south of Russia on behalf of Chinese shipowners with unprecedented five arrests imposed on the vessel within either commercial and criminal proceedings and claims for more than USD 7 million.

  • Ensuring both arrests of ships and lifting thereof under contractual, collision, and other claims, including lifting of the arrests and termination of commercial proceedings against foreign clients by establishing lack of the jurisdiction of Russian courts.
