The Marine Claims International conference is under way in Ireland, where NAVICUS.LAW is represented by its director, Ivan Kobchenko.
The previous day saw a busy programme, with more than twenty experts speaking on subjects ranging from the fallout from tariff policy for the insurance market to the ways new technologies are reshaping the sector.
Some 77% of attendees maintain that the recent changes in tariff rates have had no impact on their business. What many do find troubling, however, are the USTR port service charges, which should come into effect in October.
A separate session on casualties highlighted the destructive conduct of the parties involved: it is highly problematic when both sides retreat into a defensive position, and neither is willing to assume leadership. Under such conditions, even straightforward cases can escalate into significant losses.
Simply put, it helps enormously to have an active surveyor, competent lawyers, or a skilled claim handler on your side.
The issue of the shadow fleet did not go unmentioned. “The shadow fleet sails in silence, but its wake is loud,” as attendees put it, a phrase that captures the essence of this recent trend. One should not assume, therefore, that these “new players” in the industry are going unnoticed.
Ivan Kobchenko highlighted presentations by Suzanne Byrne and Adrian Scales. They presented case studies with real-life examples and timelines, as well as amazing illustrations and on-site photos.
